This is Cafelat's world famous corner tamping mat, invented by Paul Pratt in 2008 and used all over the world. The mat is the perfect solution for those baristas who like to tamp with the portafilter resting on the edge of the counter. The compact size is great for even the smallest barista workstations and the part that overhangs is small enough not to obscure doors or drawers that may be underneath.
When using the mat it is important to modify your technique to avoid any chance of injury, should the portafilter slip for any reason. When holding the portafilter up against the corner tamping mat, push the portafilter in towards the counter away from you. With the tamper in the other hand tamp downwards as you normally would do. This technique ensures the portafilter remains fixed.
The mat is made from a very hard and thick food grade odourless silicone. Unlike the cheaper copies on the market this has been engineered not to deform and provide a very stable tamping platform.
Of course the mat may also be used as a regular tamping mat (i.e. Small Flat Mat or Splat Mat) if you don't want to tamp on the edge.
